Update From Howard 6/27

Dear Friends,

Field Team: Three times a year our entire field team convenes for a time of prayer, fellowship and sharing best practices. We’re meeting this week starting Monday evening through Thursday breakfast outside of Columbus, Ohio. Dan Schilling and his wife Cheri along with their 6 sons: Caleb, Joshua, David, Isaac, Jeremiah and Jesse (they love the Old Testament) will host the team on their farm. Dan is an extraordinarily capable and faithful person. His contribution to Compass has been huge. We’re going to do two very special things: (1) The raspberries are in so I’ll probably get OD on them, praise God! and (2) We’re going to celebrate their mortgage burning . . . how cool!

Adversity: This week I was scheduled to meet three close friends who are all in the midst of a crisis. One is struggling to recover from a stroke. Another lost his large size business to bankruptcy and, although he is a person of high integrity, is facing criminal indictment. The third was under so much stress at work, that he left the very profitable family business. In addition, we had several callers on the half-hour MoneyWise program facing enormously challenging times. It seems that everywhere people are wrestling with a crisis of some kind.

I am rereading an excellent book, Trusting God by Jerry Bridges, that has helped me understand the Lord purpose in adversity. In John 15:1-2 Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cut off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will even be more fruitful.” Think about it: Healthy vines require both nourishment and pruning. Through the Word of God we are nourished, but through adversity we are pruned. And why? So our character will be transformed and we will be even more fruitful.

American Bible Society grant: Last week I asked you to join us in praying for the Lord to provide by June 30th, the funding necessary to fully qualify for a matching grant offered Compass by the American Bible Society. This is the first phase of a three year grant which will enable us to complete all of our materials. Our precious Lord heard all our prayers, and He graciously moved on the hearts of generous people and the match was met at just about the last possible minute! I remember what Larry Burkett used to say, “God is rarely early, but He’s never late.” I want to THANK all of you who joined us in prayer and even sacrificially gave.

It’s Hot: I enjoy trying to walk briskly for an hour, six days a week. But this summer has taken a little of the joy out of the routine. Even before dawn it is hot and muggy in central Florida. I’ve read that when we perspire, it helps to cleanse our pores. Well, I must have some of the cleanest pores around!

Warmly in Christ,

Howard

Update from Howard

Dear Friends,

For those of you have father who is living or you are a father, I trust you enjoyed a wonderful Father’s Day. I sure did! But I missed my dad who passed away at age 81. One of the reasons I look forward to the time that the Lord calls me home is that I’ll be able to hang out with my dad once again . . . this time for all eternity!

Hospitality: Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” I experienced an amazing example of hospitality this past week. I was returning home from a trip to Illinois when the weather between Kentucky and Florida became incredibly stormy. We were traveling on a small private plane, and the pilot said, “I’m not flying into that weather. Anytime you see purple on the weather radar, it means the clouds are 50,000 feet high, and there is a lot of hail. Just remember, there are bold pilots and there are old pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.” Thank the Lord . . . I’m really don’t like traveling in turbulent weather. 🙂

I called close friends, Jess and Angela Correll, from the airport in Danville, Kentucky, and immediately they dropped everything, drove to pick us up, feed us a delicious dinner, provided a comfortable bed in which to sleep and at 5:30 the next morning returned us to the airport. What started out as an unwanted interruption, became a delightful time. Whenever possible practice hospitality!

American Bible Society: In November of last year, the ABS approved a matching grant for Compass to develop its materials (for every $3 the Lord allowed Compass to raise, the American Bible Society would match $1). The 1st phase of the grant is set to expire in 10 days, on June 30th. Of the $255,000 Compass was to contribute, we have received all but approximately $37,951.34 – did I say approximately? Please pray with us that the Lord would provide the remaining amount by the 30th.

Materials: I’m knee deep in recording the revised and improved book, Your Money Counts. We’re in the final stages of editing the small group study notes for Money and Marriage God’s Way and Navigating Your Finances God’s Way.  Our objective is to get as many of the materials in video and audio format as a supplement to the written materials to help those who prefer to learn visually or orally.

I am grateful for the opportunity to connect each week with you by this wonderful technology!

Warmly in Christ,

Howard

Studies, Maps & Garage Sales

Dear Friends,

Enjoyed a productive week . . . well, some of it was productive—

Compass materials: Finished the recording of the Money and Marriage God’s Way small group study Notes. These Notes and the ones for Navigating Your Finances God’s Way will be on the Compass1.org web site and downloadable free for those participating in these small group studies. We hope to have these ready to go by the end of the month.

Been working on improving the Compass money map and are in the final stages of this project. Very excited about having this available to give people a clear step-by-step process of handling money God’s way.

Garage sale: Some people are garage sale people and others are not. Our neighborhood held its annual garage sale on Saturday. We didn’t have much to sell and sold a whopping $15 worth! That’s the good news . . . we bought $45 of stuff! At lease we paid pennies on the dollar. Bev reminded me that garage sales are just not my spiritual gift.

Coming up: Will be signing agreement with the American Bible Society on Wednesday for their publication of a Financial Bible using the 2,350 verses in the Bible dealing with money and possessions. The Financial Bible will also be formatted electronically for use over the Internet with a search component. American Bible Society has been in existence for more than 190 years, and been used by the Lord to distribute the Word of God around the world.

94 and counting: My siblings and I (and our spouses) will be spending three days with my 94 year old mom starting the 23rd. We are praying for a terrific time with her and would appreciate your prayers as well. She has a heart condition that makes her breathing very difficult.

Great book to recommend to you. I’m reading it for the third time within a year. It’s Trusting God by Jerry Bridges published by NavPress. Terrific book dealing with the part that God plays when we are experiencing a crisis. Encouraging and loaded with the truth of God’s Word!

Warmly in Christ,

Howard
