Six and Counting . . . .

I wanted to introduce you to Dan Schilling who serves as the Compass North American Director. He and his wife Cheri are expecting their seventh son next month . . . that’s not a typo . . . their 7th son!

And yes, they were hoping for a little girl this time around. After 17 years straight of diapers, they are preparing for another round and will pass 20 years by the time this child is finished! Doesn’t this make you tired just thinking about it!

After the birth of their sixth son Jesse, they weren’t ready for another child, but felt they shouldn’t do anything permanent. Then, the Lord began to speak to their hearts, asking them to trust Him.

The Lord directed them to Matthew 6:19 where Jesus says, “Store up for yourselves treasure in heaven.” They sensed the Lord asking them, “If I wanted to entrust you with something eternal, would you be willing to receive it? Of everything I’ve entrusted your family, there is only one thing you can physically touch today, that you can touch again in heaven—your children.”

Soon they will welcome that eternal gift…Noah Nathaniel, to the Schilling family!

Dan and Cheri Schilling are extraordinarily committed to following Christ and growing as His disciples. They live on a big farm in Ohio where the boys have learned a wonderful work ethic and where Cheri home schools them as well.

Dan was selected as the Compass North American Director because he is remarkably capable and because of his heart to humbly serve the North American team. He has embraced the vision of doubling the number of Compass small group study participants annually for the next five years so that 250,000 people will be enrolled each year by year five.

Please join me in praying for the Lord’s hand of blessing to remain on Dan and his family.

Warmly in Christ,

Howard Dayton

Dear Friends,

Last week I met with the Compass USA field team, and the meeting was amazing. One of the reasons may have been that we met in warm Orlando, Florida, and some of the team left the freezing temperatures of Wisconsin and New England to join us!

But, I’ve never been in a meeting where Philippians 2:2-4 became more alive. Here’s what it says: “Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look after your own personal interests, but also the interests of others.”

Granted, the Compass USA field team is a motley crew if there ever was one: different ages, genders, backgrounds, and skin colors. The team lives in different parts of the country from New England to Texas, and none of them are shy about sharing their opinions. They love to Continue reading Fellowship

I Have A Dream–Free at Last

This past June my wife and I had the privilege of hosting our “Mortgage Burning/Debt Free” party at our home!

We celebrated with around 100 guests- Howard, Dave, Kyle , the Compass field team, past mortgage& present donors, ministry leaders, friends and family all joined us in a time that will be fondly remembered by our family and I’m sure by many who attended.  You can see a brief slideshow of all the events & meetings in this SmileBox link..

Cheri & I want to thank the Lord for His miraculous provision that allowed us to pay off over $45,000 worth of debt in the past 5 years, amazingly while our annual income was never over $30,000! Also a special thanks to all who have given to this ministry over the past 7 years!  We couldn’t have done this without the Lord providing through you!

While I am thankful that we are “DEBT FREE”, I realize that I’m still not totally free.  I constantly need to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance, not George Washington’s counsel for life decisions (you know the dead president on the “almighty dollar”).  I admit that I still don’t always ask God for He wants to do with HIS money, I often find I follow the leading of the “master” that has ruled most of my life—MONEY (Matt. 6:24)

I have a dream for God’s people to be “free at last” and experience the freedom from the slavery of debt (Proverbs 22:7).  But not just freedom from debt-more importantly to be free from serving the wrong master (money/mammon) –free to live a life of obedience to Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Not sure that ‘financial freedom’ was on the heart of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  in his “I Have a Dream” speech, given  on August 28, 1963 “When all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old spiritual, “Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”  But I do believe it is on God’s heart for you & me to be ‘free at last’ from serving money instead of Him.

True freedom happens when we daily submit to a loving, intimate God -living a life of obedience to His ways. Are you free?  Regardless if you are debt free or not I hope you’ll join me in a quest for ‘true freedom’- a life that is free from serving the wrong master and then help others to do the same!

This can this be only be accomplished by the power of the Holy Spirit in us, as seen in Galatians 6:8-9

“Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

So, keep your hands to the plow and allow God to continue to complete the good work in you (Phil 1:6) so you can be free! (John 8:31-32)

Next time I’ll share in more detail some amazing things God did to help us get out of debt!
