Pray for Safety

The civil unrest and conflicts in the Ukraine with Russia have been worrisome and big news, but far removed from those of us living in North America. However, what if a family member of yours was living in Kiev?

Well, there is.

His name is Anatoly, and he is a member of God’s family—your family if you know Jesus Christ. Anatoly is the Compass Director for Ukraine and the entire Russian speaking world. He is a dedicated leader. He is married with two young children. They need your prayers because they live in a very dangerous place.

But Anatoly isn’t alone. There is the Compass South American Director, Andres Panasiuk, choosing to live in the most violent city in Mexico. And our Compass India Director, Richard, who often sends us a cryptic email asking for the prayer of protection for his team working in areas where there is massive hostility towards followers of Christ.

Would you please join us in praying for the Spirit of God to draw close and protect these men and women who are risking their lives for the sake of Christ and for teaching His way of handling money? May their examples be an encouragement to all us to make our lives count for our Lord.

Love in Christ,
Howard Dayton

Challenges and Blessings

Dear Friends,

Sometimes doesn’t it seem as if every time you turn around, you’re facing another challenging situation? Then, other times, God’s kind blessings are apparent.

Last week was a week filled with the Lord’s gracious encouragement and blessings.

So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? Luke 16:11 (Chinese)
So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? Luke 16:11 (Chinese)

First of all, the leaders of Compass from South America, Asia, Europe, India and North America met together for three days. I kept pinching myself over the privilege of just being in the same room with these godly, capable leaders. We spent chunks of time in prayer, and the Spirit of God had unusual freedom to shape our time and reveal His plan going forward.

When the leader of our Service Center in Orlando, shared, I was surprised to learn from Kelly Laughridge that we are receiving about 2,000 calls—a month! Many of the callers are from our radio audience asking for advice or wanting to Continue reading Challenges and Blessings

Update From Howard 11/3

Dear Friends,

Trust you are drawing more closely to Christ as you spend time in God’s word and in prayer!

Here’s what happening at Compass:

Curry anyone?: Our Global Managing Director, Dave Rae, and I are off to India today for 10 days. I am sooooo excited to visit this great country! India is 1/4th the size of the USA with four times as many people. A frequent traveler to India told me many cars have two drivers—one who actually drives and the other who navigates the wild streets!

There are 22 major languages and 1,000 minor ones. It’s estimated that approximately 6 percent of the country follows Christ. In the large cities there is a growing middle class and growing debt. This is the time for use to serve India!

Compass India is a key member of the Compass Global Alliance. It is served by world class leadership. Dave and I will be visiting five large cities: Mumbai, Chennai, Madurai, Kolkatta and Delhi. Please pray for us—that we would return in good health and that the Lord would allow the trip to be exceeding fruitful and pleasing to Him.

Just one more: Our team around the world has made the decision to mentor deeply at least one person a year who the Lord has called to this financial area of ministry. I am so thankful that Christ has brought two men to me this year: Doug Allen and Ken Battles. They are very faithful brothers and have already had a significant impact in the lives of many. We are going to read through the Bible in a year, meditate on one key passage of Scripture every two weeks, read some key books, hang out together and pray for each other daily. They have made the commitment that after our year together, they in turn will mentor one a year for the rest of their lives.

Wanna take the Navigating small group study on-line?: We are sooooo close to launching this! People anywhere at any time will be able to take the Navigating study and see the others in the group even though they may be thousands of miles from each other. Click on “Contacts” if you want to learn more.

Hebrews 6:10: The passage has been a huge encouragement to me recently. “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown him by helping his people, and continue to help them.”  Think about that for a moment. The Lord of the universe will not forget the work you do for Him. And when you help His people, you are showing your love for Jesus! Wow!

May each of us help the Lord’s people today.

Love in Christ,

Howard

Debt Downgrade & Ministry Update

Dear Friends,

Downgrade of US Debt: Well, the big news last week was the approval of raising the debt ceiling a couple of trillion dollars, and then late Friday the bombshell of Standard & Poor’s downgrading US Federal Debt from AAA to AA+. If that wasn’t enough, S & P also issued a “negative outlook” which simply means there’s a chance it will lower the rating further within the next couple of years.

Well, what’s this mean for our country? What’s this mean for individuals? How’s this going to impact investors?

Howard’s Assessment: Here’s my take on this:

  1. Even though there is a lot of finger pointing among politicians and financial gurus give all sorts of reasons for the downgrading, fundamentally it is because our government is spending $1.60 for every $1.00 of revenue, and the increasing debt is unsustainable. Just as any household can’t spend more than its income, the government can’t either forever.
  2. I believe this is a major wake-up call provided by the Lord to His people to learn and apply what the Bible tells us about handling money. In other words, give generously, spend wisely, save regularly and get out of debt.
  3. I’m also fully convinced that God is communicating to us that our trust cannot be in anything other than Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 6:17 tells us, “. . . not to fix our hope on the uncertainty of riches, but only on God who richly provides with all things to enjoy.” He wants us to draw closer to Him and be about our Father’s business.
  4. No one apart from the Lord really knows the impact on investments. My suggestion, stay close to the Lord and seek His guidance.

What’s happening globally: In both Latin America and India, God is moving powerfully in the ministries of our Compass Global Alliance partners lead by Andres Panasiuk and Richard Samuel. The Compass India small group studies were first begun about six weeks ago and the testimonies are amazing—please pray that in India and Latin America, the Holy Spirit would radically transform the lives of those learning God’s way of handling money.

We are also in the final stages of translation agreements for the Money and Marriage small group study for Korea and all our materials for Israel. We could not have hoped for better partners in both of those countries.

I do: As an ordained elder, I have had the opportunity to occasionally perform weddings of close friends. So far I’ve married 5 couples: two by pools in back yards, two outside by lakes, and one in a home . . . . and this Friday, well it’ll be in a real church! I may even wear a robe! Pray that the great couple and especially the “preacher” won’t be too nervous. 🙂

Love in Christ,
Howard Dayton

Update from Howard 5/31

Hi Friends,

I hope everyone had a great Memorial day weekend.  I am very appreciative for the men and women who have and are currently serving and protecting our country.  I served in the Navy and was stationed in Vietnam for a year, so I know of the sacrifice these men and women have made and are making for this country.  I am very thankful and grateful for each one of them. May God bless them and their families!

Here’s what is happening . . .

How we doing with our saving? I couldn’t believe it! Read an article that the average percentage of income a person saves in China is 39%; in India it’s 35%; while the average in the USA is only 3.9%. Think about it! The average income in China and India is very small compared to America . . . yet they are saving so much more of their income!

Global: Two key members of our Compass Global Alliance, Andres Panasiuk from Latin America and Richard Samuel from India joined the USA leadership. God is moving in a remarkable way in both places. The Navigating Your Finances small group study was launched in English in India last month. Later this month it will be launched in Hindi and Tamil. They are projecting that during the next 12 months, they will have about 25,000 people participate in the study. God is also blessing Andres and the work in Latin America in an amazing way.

We are scheduling a trip to India in November . . . let’s see, should I communicate to them in English, Hindi or Tamil? Well, this time I’ll speak in English…lol!

Materials: The 9 week Navigating Your Finances God’s Way small group study is on the way from the printer! This is the traditional small group study that has been improved and refreshed. We are praying that the Lord will use it powerfully in the lives of many people.

Family: Spent several days in Gainesville, Georgia, with my 94 year old mom and my siblings. It was a precious time, but very emotional and fatiguing. Mom’s health is clearly failing.  We decided to try to gather again to celebrate her 95th birthday on September 20th. Pray that the Lord will continue to draw my mom close to Himself in a very tender way.

Warmly in Jesus,
Howard

Greetings from India

Shillong, India

Oh, the joy of travel! I’m currently in India a nation of 1.2 billion people, where there are multiple cultures, religions, ideologies and State government formats! There are thousands of gods and hundreds of free roaming sacred cows! The geography is as diverse as it’s peoples and languages!

I’ve come to India to support the Compass India team as they launch, for the 1st time in their history a 12-week financial study – Navigating Finances God Way! This will be one of only a handful of small groups studies presented by any ministry or denomination within the country!

I’ve been in the country for 4 days and have assisted the team in presenting Facilitator training in Kochi – a city of 2 million on the southwest coast, Kolkata- 12 million, on the sea of Bengal, then in Shillong and Guwahati, in the extreme northeast. These trainings have been focused on the leaders of influence in their cities and church denominations. In these 3 training we have averaged 35 leaders / training.

We have also met with the senior leaders of 3 denominations who signed letters of intent asking us to partner with them to bring about Stewardship ministry within their denominations.

So far the interest and enthusiasm is incredible! They are thankful for your help in making it possible for their people to study these truths 1st hand and learn the Biblical practices of handling resources effectively!

I’ll be traveling for another 10 days. Speaking to more Facilitators in Imphal & Mumbai, as well as presenting a leadership seminar in the same cities in honor of Dr. Dick Wynn.

For your interest on this 14 day trip, I will spend 10 nights in 8 different hotels or guest-houses and 4 nights sleeping in aircraft, as well, I will have spent 76 hours on those aircraft visiting 8 different cities! Not that I’m counting.

Blessings from your Brothers & Sisters in India!

Dave

Update from Howard

Hey Friends!

Here’s what happening:

Radio: Interviewed Wes Perry on the MoneyWise call in program. Wes is the mayor of Midland, Texas, and an Oil and Gas expert. Wanted our listeners to be able to ask him questions about why gasoline was so high at the pump these days. Loved his answer to the question: “Will oil cost $50 a barrel or $150 a barrel?” His answer, “Yes!” The price of oil is unpredictable and volatile.

FPU: Finished co-leading Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) 13 week DVD series with a class of 22 young couples at our church. It is really well done, and Dave is an amazingly gifted communicator. I”m convinced that people and churches would benefit most by taking FPU and the Compass Navigating Your Finances God’s Way small group study. The strength of FPU is the practical and the strength of Navigating is the biblical financial emphasis. Both are needed.

Prayer request: Please pray for Compass’ president, Dave Rae, who will be traveling and speaking often in India and Asia. Pray for his safety and health and for the Lord to allow this to be an incredibly fruitful time for him with our outstanding leadership in this part of the world.

Think about it and grow: I read Proverbs 119:58 this morning, and it really convicted me. It says, “I have sought your [the Lord’s] face with all my heart, be gracious to me according to your promises.” I am by nature an “A” personality—a busy, activist type person. Too often I jump in to pray and read my Bible and do my work without being quiet and seeking the face of Christ with all my heart. Let’s be quiet and get to know Jesus better.

Love in Christ,
Howard

Springing Forth

The verse that the Lord impressed on my heart when He led me to start Compass—finances God’s way is coming true.

Isaiah 43:18-19 says,

“Do not call to mind the former things, or ponder the things of the past. Behold, I [the Lord] will do something new, now it will spring forth. Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.”

A lot of things have been “springing forth” in the first quarter of 2011.

  • From Florida to California the Lord has continued to bring us godly and capable people to serve full-time with us in the USA field.
  • The Money and Marriage and Navigating Your Finances God’s Way small group studies are at the printers.
  • Compass India, a member of the Compass Global Alliance, just rolled out the Navigating small group study in English and the Tamil and Hindi translations are not far behind.
  • Crown decided that their ½ hour radio program was no longer part of their calling, so after prayer and seeking advice of key people in Christian radio, we launched MoneyWise on March 14th. God was good to bring my co-host, Steve Moore, back to serve as executive producer of the call-in program. We’ve had a blast getting it off the ground, and it is already carried by 315 stations and outlets. The Hey Howard one minute program is now carried by 1,096 stations and outlets.

I have a lot more to share with you, but I’ll save that for next week.

Deeply grateful for your prayers! Check out www.compass1.org.
