Update from Howard 10/4

Dear Friends,

I trust you are drawing close to Christ and spending time in His word!

Let me bring you current on what’s happening these days:

Oh, my arm is sore! Ouch . . . Got my immunizations for the trip to India, and it took me a full week to recover from the soreness in my shoulders.  Dave Rae (Compass president), Dale Ditto (from Kentucky who has real heart for India) and I will be traveling to India November 3 – 13. The Compass India Managing Director, Richard Samuel, has schedule five Money and Marriage God’s Way seminars for us to present. We also will visit Compass India staff in five major cities, their Board of Directors and a large orphanage. Please pray for a fruitful and safe trip, and that I not eat too much curry.

On the St. John’s River: Spent two wonderful days with Jim Whorton, the Compass Executive Director in Jacksonville, Florida. Jim has been serving Jacksonville and north Florida for more than a decade. It is such an encouragement to see the amazingly capable people that have been called to serve with him. Jim is part of a small group who have been meeting for more than 20 years each week to pray for their community, and the Lord is answering prayers big time . . . Is this something that God might be calling you to do for your city?

Coming soon—Videos on www.compass1.org: We’ve been working for some time on a number of videos introducing Compass, the Navigating Your Finances and Money and Marriage small group studies. We also have videos dealing with Why and How Churches Should Teach God’s Way of Handling Money. The final video presents what the Lord revealed to me about the coming financial Crisis. The web designer has the videos and they should be up soon. Check them out . . .

Just One More: I had the privilege of speaking at our local Christian in Public Schools chapter on Saturday and showed the end of the very powerful movie, Schindler’s List. The setting is Nazi Germany during WWII, and the main character is Oscar Schindler, a businessman who ransoms 1,100 Jews scheduled to be sent to the death camps. At the very end of the movie, he receives word that WWII is over. He is surrounded by those he ransomed and is overcome with the realization that he could have done more. He takes off a gold pin on his coat and says, “I could have done more. He would have given me one more. Just one more.”

This really captures the heart of Compass. If everyone who serves with Compass—small group facilitators, coaches, volunteers and our full-time staff—would disciple at least one more each year, producing a financially faithful person who would in turn reproduce him or herself in the life of “just one more” each year . . . the impact over the next 15 years would be stunning!

I hope you’ll consider joining us and committing to reach “just one more” each year.

Warmly in Christ,
Howard

Debt Downgrade & Ministry Update

Dear Friends,

Downgrade of US Debt: Well, the big news last week was the approval of raising the debt ceiling a couple of trillion dollars, and then late Friday the bombshell of Standard & Poor’s downgrading US Federal Debt from AAA to AA+. If that wasn’t enough, S & P also issued a “negative outlook” which simply means there’s a chance it will lower the rating further within the next couple of years.

Well, what’s this mean for our country? What’s this mean for individuals? How’s this going to impact investors?

Howard’s Assessment: Here’s my take on this:

  1. Even though there is a lot of finger pointing among politicians and financial gurus give all sorts of reasons for the downgrading, fundamentally it is because our government is spending $1.60 for every $1.00 of revenue, and the increasing debt is unsustainable. Just as any household can’t spend more than its income, the government can’t either forever.
  2. I believe this is a major wake-up call provided by the Lord to His people to learn and apply what the Bible tells us about handling money. In other words, give generously, spend wisely, save regularly and get out of debt.
  3. I’m also fully convinced that God is communicating to us that our trust cannot be in anything other than Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 6:17 tells us, “. . . not to fix our hope on the uncertainty of riches, but only on God who richly provides with all things to enjoy.” He wants us to draw closer to Him and be about our Father’s business.
  4. No one apart from the Lord really knows the impact on investments. My suggestion, stay close to the Lord and seek His guidance.

What’s happening globally: In both Latin America and India, God is moving powerfully in the ministries of our Compass Global Alliance partners lead by Andres Panasiuk and Richard Samuel. The Compass India small group studies were first begun about six weeks ago and the testimonies are amazing—please pray that in India and Latin America, the Holy Spirit would radically transform the lives of those learning God’s way of handling money.

We are also in the final stages of translation agreements for the Money and Marriage small group study for Korea and all our materials for Israel. We could not have hoped for better partners in both of those countries.

I do: As an ordained elder, I have had the opportunity to occasionally perform weddings of close friends. So far I’ve married 5 couples: two by pools in back yards, two outside by lakes, and one in a home . . . . and this Friday, well it’ll be in a real church! I may even wear a robe! Pray that the great couple and especially the “preacher” won’t be too nervous. 🙂

Love in Christ,
Howard Dayton

Never Give Up!

Dear Friends,

Never give up! I don’t know if you saw USA vs. Brazil women’s quarter final soccer game yesterday, but it was amazing! Down one player with one minute left in the game, the American women scored a spectacular goal to even the score. They ultimately defeated an outstanding Brazilian team who has the best player in the world.

The lesson: Even despite overwhelming odds—never, ever give up when you are doing what the Lord is calling you to do.

Compass materials: This week I’m focusing on shooting some DVDs for the Money and Marriage small group study and on rewriting the Special Edition small group study (which is designed for the affluent). The Lord has been kind to reveal in more detail the challenges the affluent face and opportunities He’s extended to them to make a real difference for the Kingdom.

Mom: A friend has made available a plane to fly our family to spend a day with my 94 year old mom who’s health is failing. We’re bringing our 2 year old granddaughter, Taliyah, with us . . . please pray that active and energetic Taliyah won’t be too much for mom and will take her naps. 🙂

God Bless!
Howard

Update from Howard

Dear Friends,

More radio recording in the closet: Well, it’s official, I am now recording my part of the Compass radio programs, MoneyWise and Hey Howard from our closet at home . . . and it’s working well. Our radio engineer, Rich Roszel, is an engineering genius and the ISDN line and amplifier mixer (doesn’t it sound as if I know what I’m talking about?) are functioning very well. It’s so convenient and certainly cuts down on the cost of gas for travel J

Trip to Georgia: Bev and I drove to Atlanta to attend a conference and then spent a day with my 94 year old mom. Mom is an amazing person who continues to teach me much. As she says so often, “Growing older is not for sissies!” Since we have become grandparents, Bev doesn’t like to travel on Mondays . . . or Tuesdays . . . or Wednesday . . . well, you get the picture. Granddaughter Taliyah has proven to be a bigger magnet than either of us thought possible.

Materials: I am focused on completing the Money and Marriage God’s Way and the Navigating CDs and DVDs that accompany these small group studies and would appreciate your prayers that these would be done with excellence.

Meditate on this and grow: Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” So, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the brevity of life and it’s uncertainty. In fact, I can remember exactly where I was when I learned by dad, the best man in my wedding, John Kennedy and Robert Fraley along with Payne Stewart all unexpectedly died. Life is short and it is uncertain. Let’s recommit ourselves to make it count for Christ.

Warmly in Christ,
Howard

Howard’s Update

Dear Friends,

Compass materials: I’m eager to receive the Money and Marriage God’s Way small group study materials. Have been working on these materials about a year and can’t wait to receive them from the printer this week. It’s a six week study. Bev and I led two pilot groups of young married couples and were sooooo encouraged by how the Lord used the study to transform and strengthen their marriages. The biggest surprise–even after 40 years of marriage to Bev, writing this study helped me to become a much better husband!!

Radio recording in the closet: Our radio engineer, Rich Roszel, visited our home to set up my radio studio—in our closet. I’m married to an amazing woman who would allow me to invade her closet! The closet is often the quietest room in the house because it is an interior room with no exposure to an outside wall. So, I’ll be recording from the closet starting Tuesday. The biggest challenge will be when we are babysitting our 2 year old granddaughter, Taliyah. She’s very verbal and more than a little loud. On second thought, it might be wiser to set up the studio outside where the only noise we have to deal with are autos, planes and lawnmowers…lol.

Testing the Webinar training: Maverick Martin, the Compass Executive Director from Wisconsin and our IT guru, is going to be testing our training of small group facilitators online using a Webinar. In the old days we did the trainings live and in person over 6 hours and the cost was $88. Now, we’ve streamlined the training to 1½ hours and will conduct it online every couple of weeks . . . and it’s free! Very grateful to Maverick (what a great name) for all his work on this project.

Meditate on this and grow: When you are in the midst of a financial challenge or any crisis, it is super important to meditate on the promises found in the Bible—especially those that help us focus on the Lord. Hebrews 13:5-6 has been especially meaningful to me: “He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What shall man do to me?’”

Warmly in Christ,
Howard

New Studies and Update

Hey friends!

I’m saddened to say that Dr. Dick Wynn passed away, and his memorial service for the Orlando area is scheduled for this coming Saturday at 1 pm at Northland Church. At the service I’ll have the opportunity to share the amazing impact that this servant of God had on teaching people God’s way of handling money around the globe. The Lord used him to reach literally millions of people from South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Please pray for the Lord’s tenderness at this time for his equally amazing wife, Janet.

I’ve finished recording the notes for the Navigating Your Finances-God’s Way small group studies and I am almost finished recording the Money and Marriage God’s Way study notes as well. As soon as the recordings are edited, they’ll be available on the web site. The reasons we wanted to make the notes available to listen to are because so many people prefer to learn by listening rather than reading, and it’s a terrific way to reinforce what you’ve already read. (Stay tuned to our website and Facebook page for more information on each of these studies coming very soon.)

Bev and I recently moved to a home that’s only three miles from our son, Matt, and his wife, Michelle . . . . and did I mention from our first grandchild, Taliyah! Thankful we can be close to family and available as babysitters at a moment’s notice.

This week, Lord willing, I’ll be finishing up the editing of the Catholic Edition of the Navigating study, that Jon and Evelyn have been working on so hard.

God bless you!

Warmly in Christ,

Howard
