As I’ve continued to read about the kings in the Old Testament, one theme keeps surfacing: The condition of their hearts. God is super interested in our hearts, because that’s who we really are. “For man looks at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
So, what’s God say about our hearts?
- The Lord knows our hearts. “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15).
- We should pray to have the right heart. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation from my heart be acceptable in Your sight” (Psalm 19:14).
- Reading God’s Word helps produce the right heart. “Your word have I treasured in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:10).
- We are to be careful to protect our hearts. “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
