Update From Howard 10/10

Dear Friends,

Where do we invest in this economy?: A experienced stock market investor just told me, “When I buy into the stock market, I no longer feel as if I’m making a well researched investment; instead, it’s more like a well researched bet. World economies and the market are just so uncertain and volatile.”  Well, Ecclesiastes 11:2 wisely counsels us to “Divide your portion to 7 or even 8, because you do not know what misfortune will occur upon the earth.” So, please diversify your investments . . .

Long Johns Packed: Bev and I are headed out to Colorado Springs—with 11 inches of snow on the ground—for our second annual Compass Retreat. It will be just a little different weather from the high 80s of Florida. Who chose the Colorado Springs location at this time of year anyhow? Oh, yes, it was me!

Please pray that our team of about 60, from as far away as India and Latin America, will have a terrific time together as we seek to grow closer to Christ and each other and hear His direction for Compass.

Your Money Counts going digital: You can now get the book Your Money Counts for your Kindle, and we’re beginning to work on getting it ipad and Android tablet ready.

Eternity: The death of Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, once again brought eternity into sharp focus for me. I’m among the many who admire Apple and the amazing advancements in technology that Mr. Jobs orchestrated. This ministry and my family have personally benefited greatly from his  contributions to our electronic lives. But as soon as I learned of his passing, my first thought wasn’t about his accomplishments, it was about his eternal destiny. I can only pray that Steve Jobs knows Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Jesus told us with unmistakable clarity, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.”

May those of us who know Jesus, be grateful that we are children of God. And may we be committed to pray for and tell those who don’t yet know Him about the good news of the Savior.

Warmly in Christ,
Howard

Update from Howard – Sept 6

Dear Friends,

Trust you enjoyed a terrific Labor Day weekend.

God’s view of work: Labor Day certainly is a good time to reflect on our work and the Lord’s perspective of it. I’ll never forget that first time I learned that the very first thing that God did with Adam was to “Put him in the garden to cultivate and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). In the sinless environment of the garden of Eden, God instituted work for our benefit!

And if that’s not enough, do you know who is your real boss? Colossians 3:23-24 tell us, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men . . . it is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Amazing! We actually work for Jesus Christ, not the person who hands out our paycheck. And because we work for Christ, our attitude toward work and those who are our superiors should reflect the Lord . . . I only wish I’d known that when I was serving in the Navy in Viet Nam under Lt. Commander Mac! My attitude wasn’t exactly the best…lol.

Calling all Coaches: We decided in March when we launched our half hour call-in radio program, MoneyWise, that we wanted to respond to everyone who called asking us a financial question. Unfortunately, we’re not able to have everyone on the program, so we follow-up by connecting all of them with a coach. We’ve been wonderfully blessed to have Sam and Sandy Register serve as the volunteer coordinator of our coaches. But they needed to resign so they could home school their three grandchildren . . . talk about blessed grandkids!

Soooooo, if you or someone you know would like to serve in this capacity, I’d be grateful is you could contact my assistant, Kelly, at klaughridge@compass1.org. Please pray with us that the Lord will bring us just the right person!

Business By The Book: About 8 years ago, the Lord prompted me to author a small group study and a DVD series based on Larry Burkett’s classic book, Business By The Book. Our president, Dave Rae, is now working on a complete refreshment and improvement of these materials. He convened a wonderful focus group of people involved in ministry to the business community last week to secure their input. The time was fantastic! The Lord’s hand is clearly on this project, and we hope to begin conducting pilot groups before the end of the year.

Your Money Counts audio book: Whew . . . finally finished recording the last chapter of the audio book for Your Money Counts. It’s our objective to have all of our written books in audio book format as well. So many people today prefer to listen rather than read, and we want to make it available to them. We’ll let you know when it’s been edited and it’s ready to download.

What should I invest my money today?: That’s one of the most common questions I’m asked. We’ve just assembled a small group of godly investors to work on helping to answer that question. We’re going to study and meditate on different passages from the Bible dealing with how to handle resources in times of financial upheaval. Then communicate weekly as we pray and fast for God’s direction. We’ll let you know what we’re learning . . .

Thankful for you!

Warmly in Christ,
Howard

Weekly Update from Howard 7/27

Dear Friends,

California Trip: The two day trip to California last week was a blast . . . and tiring! Travel is a lot more work than it was 15 years ago . . . I’m getting older and it’s getting harder.

Spent time with Sid and Donna Ward (our Compass field staff living north of Los Angles in Ventura) and Jim Sullivan who has served with me for 17 years in Orange County. Here are the big takeaways from the trip: (1) You can tell if the Lord is in something by the people He brings. The people serving as volunteers with Sid, Donna and Jim were amazingly capable, passionate and, to a person, obviously in love with Christ, (2) The weather in California near the Pacific is to die for, and the traffic is to die from, and (3) God is pleased with what we are doing at Compass.

Also had the opportunity—along with my close buddy Jim Dilworth—to speak to the Orange County chapter of Kingdom Advisors. KA is an association of professionals who work in the financial advising world and operate their practices using biblical principles.

Materials: Finished writing the script for the audio book of Your Money Counts. Guessing we’ll have the recording done and edited in about 30 days . . . if my voice holds out, that is. 🙂

Pray for Rich Roszel: Rich produces our HeyHoward and MoneyWise radio programs, and his dad passed away Sunday morning. He must have been a great man because he raised a great son. Please join us in praying for Rich and his family.

Pray for Matt Dayton: My son turned 37 on the 21st and has always been in great shape. As a regular surfer, his body fat is almost zero! But for the last couple of months, he has had difficulty sleeping and breathing. Please pray that the Lord will give the doctors wisdom as they conduct testing and that our Lord will heal Matt completely.

Thanks for allowing me to share with you!

Warmly in Christ,
Howard

Update from Howard

Dear Friends,

For those of you have father who is living or you are a father, I trust you enjoyed a wonderful Father’s Day. I sure did! But I missed my dad who passed away at age 81. One of the reasons I look forward to the time that the Lord calls me home is that I’ll be able to hang out with my dad once again . . . this time for all eternity!

Hospitality: Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” I experienced an amazing example of hospitality this past week. I was returning home from a trip to Illinois when the weather between Kentucky and Florida became incredibly stormy. We were traveling on a small private plane, and the pilot said, “I’m not flying into that weather. Anytime you see purple on the weather radar, it means the clouds are 50,000 feet high, and there is a lot of hail. Just remember, there are bold pilots and there are old pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.” Thank the Lord . . . I’m really don’t like traveling in turbulent weather. 🙂

I called close friends, Jess and Angela Correll, from the airport in Danville, Kentucky, and immediately they dropped everything, drove to pick us up, feed us a delicious dinner, provided a comfortable bed in which to sleep and at 5:30 the next morning returned us to the airport. What started out as an unwanted interruption, became a delightful time. Whenever possible practice hospitality!

American Bible Society: In November of last year, the ABS approved a matching grant for Compass to develop its materials (for every $3 the Lord allowed Compass to raise, the American Bible Society would match $1). The 1st phase of the grant is set to expire in 10 days, on June 30th. Of the $255,000 Compass was to contribute, we have received all but approximately $37,951.34 – did I say approximately? Please pray with us that the Lord would provide the remaining amount by the 30th.

Materials: I’m knee deep in recording the revised and improved book, Your Money Counts. We’re in the final stages of editing the small group study notes for Money and Marriage God’s Way and Navigating Your Finances God’s Way.  Our objective is to get as many of the materials in video and audio format as a supplement to the written materials to help those who prefer to learn visually or orally.

I am grateful for the opportunity to connect each week with you by this wonderful technology!

Warmly in Christ,

Howard
